Selling at Auction
Discover how easy it is to find out the value of your items and sell them in an appropriate auction at Browns.
Step 1: Initial valuation. Prior to accepting a lot for sale, we examine your property to provide a fair market value. This service is complimentary and can be performed in person at our saleroom, at your home, virtually via a video call or from photographs.
Step 2: Consigning your items. You will receive a full customer receipt outlining your details, the items you wish to consign (including sale dates, brief description, estimates and any reserves discussed) and the commission and charges involved. When appropriate, a reserve may be placed on individual items; reserves cannot exceed the low estimate. In our experience a high reserve can put some bidders off, whereas a lower reserve encourages more bidders to participate, generating higher prices.
Step 3: Charges. Seller’s commission is 20% + VAT of hammer value above £40 (25% + VAT below £40). Sold lots are also subject to a loss & warranty charge of 1.5% of the hammer price plus VAT and a £3.00 + VAT photography and listing charge. We provide an in-house, fully insured collection and delivery service – please discuss your requirements with our team.
Step 4: Before the auction. You will receive a pre-sale notification indicating which lots will be offered, with descriptions, estimates and reserves.
Step 5: After the auction. Shortly after the sale you will receive a Results of Sale notification. If one or two lots remain unsold we may include them in a timed online auction to give bidders a second chance, at no extra cost to you. Payment is sent 28 working days after the auction for all lots sold and collected, with a detailed settlement statement.
